Four Days in Helsinki – Suomenlinna

There are many day trips you can take from the city of Helsinki. We chose to visit the island fortress of Soumenlinna which is just a short ferry ride away. This Unesco listed sight was used as a maritime fortress between the 1750s till 1970s. Since then it has been renovated for residential use. The island still has many reminders of it’s time as a fortress of war. There are bunkers, canons, underground tunnels and fortified walls. But these days its also a beautiful place full of wild flowers, hidden ocean coves perfect for sunbathing and lazing the day away with a good book. The day we went was super sunny so the island was busier that usual with picnickers and couples on dates. We stopped by a cafe with a view and explored the island, having a super relaxing day.

Back in the city there were two must-do’s on our list. One was to have an afternoon tea cake buffet at Kakkugalleria. Yes that’s all you can eat cake! I can tell you all the cakes were delicious and amazing – with my favourites being blueberry pie and the strawberry mousse cake.

Our last stop was the beautiful Art Deco and Art Nouveau Hotel Torni. The rooftop Ateljee bar gives you 360 degree views over Helsinki. Even the restrooms have floor to ceiling windows which is unique experience. I love getting up high over a city for a birds eye view of where I’ve been. This place with its view and evening atmosphere was the perfect finish to our time in Helsinki.

This was the last day of our trip to Helsinki, Finland. We also visited Nuuksio National Park and explored more of Helsinki city during our trip.
