Four days in Helsinki – The Midnight Sun

This European Summer my sister and I stopped by the Finnish capital of Helsinki. I arrived with little idea about the place as the trip had been organised mostly to visit family and friends there. But I really fell in love with this place during the summer season – I’m sure the long dark winter is an entirely different story. The city comes alive during the long summer evenings when the sun never sets. We enjoyed long evening walks admiring the Art Nouveau and Nordic Minimalist architecture, and lights and life along the many harbours. It was hard to choose just a few souvenirs as we were spoilt for choice browsing the boutiques of minimal and nature inspired Finnish design like Itala, Marimekko, Finnlayson and many local artisans. Among the local foods we tried my favourites were the cinnamon and cardamon rolls, loads of Fazer chocolate in every flavour, blueberry pie, ginger biscuits, savoury rice pie with carrot or potato, rye bread, cloudberry and of course the fresh salmon.

During our trip to HelsinkiFinland we also visited Suomenlinna Island Fortress and Nuuksio National Park.
